SAISD Recognizes D.E.S.K Non-Profit for Donating Over $70,000 for School Supplies

San Angelo ISD and SAISD Board of Trustees recognized the D.E.S.K non-profit organization at Monday’s Board Meeting in appreciation of nearly two decades supporting San Angelo ISD students and families in need of school supplies. D.E.S.K, which stands for Donate Educational Supplies to Kids, presented SAISD schools with funds for the 2021-2022 school year in the amount of $71,260.71 in August. The funds were allocated out to each SAISD campus based on need for school supply purchase last month.

“Year after year, D.E.S.K. continues to be an outstanding example of how our West Texas community supports the District in helping improve the lives of SAISD children and supporting our families,“ said SAISD Superintendent Dr. Carl Dethloff. “We appreciate the time, effort and dedication of each of the members of D.E.S.K and the collaborative relationship with the District. SAISD looks forward to seeing the creativity that is generated by our students using the school supplies from D.E.S.K. The spirit of giving is alive and well in our City thanks to the philanthropy and dedication of community organizations like D.E.S.K.”

D.E.S.K was founded in 2004 by local resident and entrepreneur Eric Wilson, who identified an unmet need to assist SAISD students in obtaining school supplies. Mr. Wilson formed a board of concerned Concho Valley community members who set out to raise funds to meet this need. Now in its 17th year, the organization has raised an astounding grand total of $851,815.80 since 2004 for the purpose of helping those in the school district who are unable to purchase supplies for the school year. SAISD principals and staff acknowledge the meaningful contribution by D.E.S.K for their schools, and have shared stories about how the organization helps families in need while also supporting teachers who might otherwise feel compelled to provide those supplies themselves.

“The D.E.S.K supply outreach is such an amazing support for our SAISD families, which I see firsthand here at Reagan. This organization supplies students with their basic learning needs to enhance the foundation of classroom success,” said Reagan Elementary Principal Brandy Tyner. “D.E.S.K provides so much more than just school supplies, it empowers our learning community and ensures the success of our campus culture.”

The organization hosts fundraisers throughout the year including a golf tournament, online silent auction, participation in San Angelo Gives 24-hour, online giving event in May, and a Christmas decoration sale as well as fall school supply drives.

“We are all so proud that D.E.S.K. has not only helped our SAISD students with their much needed supplies, but it has also brought awareness to our community of how everyone’s generosity can have such a positive impact on our students, their families and SAISD’s faculty and administration by helping improve our student’s learning experience,” said D.E.S.K Vice President Vicki Loso.

D.E.S.K. is composed of a group of local businesses who volunteer in fundraising efforts. Business sponsors include McDonalds, 1st Community Federal Credit Union, Townsquare Media, San Angelo Standard Times, KLST, Dr. Pepper, Sam's Club, and CHS Key Club. Current Board members for D.E.S.K are Eric Wilson, Diane Wilson, Vicki Loso, Cheryl Book, Ken Grimm, Andy Maier and Jacklyn Ochoa.

San Angelo ISD extends sincere appreciation to D.E.S.K. members and contributors for helping SAISD students receive the supplies they need and joining the District in supporting their hopes and dreams.
